Politically potent lyrics sung to a pop beat do not usually make a splash on Korean music charts. But now Seo Taiji and the Boys have burst on the scene using rap and hip-hop Korean-style to voice what's on the mind of South Korea's youth. Dressed in American-style street gear and earrings, the group delivers a musical melange of love, politics and social issues that has brought them a string of No. 1 hits, album sales of more than 5 million and legions of screaming fans.
정치적인 가사 내용으로 부른 한국가요는 한국의 가요차트에서 대개 커다란 성과를 만들어 오지 못했다. 하지만 세 명의 20대 젊은이로 구성된 댄스 트리오 서태지와 아이들은 한국 젊은이들의 마음을 정확히 짚어낸 목소리로 한국적 스타일의 랩과 힙합을 이용해 커다란 반향을 일으켰다. 이들은 미국 스타일의 장식품과 귀걸이를 달고 데뷔 이후 자신들에게 500만장 이상의 '넘버 원' 앨범 판매고와 아우성치는 팬들에게 고함소리를 안겨준 사랑과 정치, 사회적인 이슈들의 음악적 혼합물을 제공해 주고 있다.
The trio-vocalist Seo Taiji, 22, plus singer-dancers Yang Hyun Suk, 24, and Lee Ju No, 25- criticizes the South Korean education system in Classroom Ideas, saying it serves only to turn the nation's youths into "machines". And the group elegizes the country's North-South division in Dreming of Palhae a symbol of the Golden Age of ancient Korea, with the lyrics "We are looking forward to the day/ When we meet together again/ We are brothers and sisters/ But our greed has made enemies of us." High-energy performances by the three feature flashing lights, video screens and troupes of break dancers, but shrewdly they never stray too far from home, incorporating some elements of traditional folk music. Seo and the Boys recently made their overseas debut in Japan. Next they would like to take their act to the U.S. and Europe- "to let foreigners know what young Koreans are thinking about", says Seo.
그들의 보컬리스트인 서태지(23) 외에 댄서 겸 가수인 양현석(25), 이주노(26)는 '교실이데아'란 노래에서 청소년들을 획일적인 공부 기계로 만들어 가고 있는 한국 교육제도의 문제점을 신랄히 비판했다. 3집의 타이틀곡인 '발해를 꿈꾸며'에서는 고대 발해(한국)의 황금기였던 해동성국을 상징으로 남북한의 분단 현실을 노래하고 있다. 그들이 말하길 "우리는 북한과 다시 결합해 그들과 형제 자매가 될 날을 기다리고 있습니다. 하지만 우리들의 욕심은 그들과 경쟁상대가 되고 있습니다" 라고 했다. 보다 세계적인 가수가 되려면 조명과 비디오 스크린, 그리고 브레이크 댄스의 재주가 필요하다. (물론 음악은 당연하고) 그리고 대부분은 영어로 판을 내는데 그들은 한국의 자존심을 위함인지 현명하게도 전통적인 한국의 음악적인 요소를 통합시켜내며 자신들의 고향인 한국 즉, 자신들이 발디디고 있는 곳으로부터 벗어나지 않는 음악활동을 해왔다. 그러나 최근 서태지와 아이들은 일본에서의 해외 데뷔를 이루어냈다. 다음으로 그들은 활동무대를 미국과 유럽으로 넓히려 하고 있다. 한국의 젊은이들이 무슨 생각을 하며 사는지 외국인들이 할 수 있도록 만들기 위해서이다.
