Passing through a group called Hwalwhasan (an active volcano), Taiji stood at the crossroads between schooling and music and gave up the former rebelling against Korean educational system which suppressed students' individuality. He was picked up by Sinawui, a metal group, as a bassist in 1989 when he was 17; around that time Taiji left a school for good.

In 1992 Taiji published his first album titled 'I know,' which introduced Korean style of rap adapting from Afro-American rap.

Nine months later, Taiji published his forth record titled 'Comeback Home', gangster rap, which is the first try in Korea.
But the lyrics of the song 'Regret The Times' were nearly deleted by the Korea Broadcasting Ethics committee, which believed that Taiji's lyrics can be harmful to Korean youngsters. This outrageous censorship gave the public rise to claim to abolish the prior deliberation by the committee and ended up with abolition of the system itself.
